Exchange Server 2013 SP1– Error Message: Value Cannot be null. Parameter Name: legacyExchangeDN

Share this:

If you are using Exchange Server 2013 SP1 and when you create a new in-place eDiscovery & hold, you may get the following error message: The search has incorrect parameters. Please correct the error and retry. The message from the search server is ‘Value cannot be null. Parameter name: legacyExchangeDN’.

This problem is specific on Exchange Server 2013 Service Pack 1, the error message is displayed in the image below.

Unfortunately, at this point there is no workaround in the current version, and based on the support team statement this issue will be fixed in the next Cumulative Update release. It seems that this issue happens in certain situations which wasn’t disclosed to me during my support incident, so it is not going to affect all systems running Service Pack 1.

As part of the troubleshooting to fix the issue, I tried a couple of things but none of them worked. Here is a list of a couple of tests I performed before opening a ticket with Microsoft Support Services:

  • Recreate the Discovery Mailbox
  • Use a different Discovery Mailbox using Exchange Management Shell

This is a known issue on the Service Pack 1 and as soon as I have more information I will be updating this post.
